Wacken Open Air XXIV
Wacken (Germany)
(Pentax K-5 with Sigma AF 70-200mm 2.8 EX DC APO HSM II)
The horned skull was situated above the Black Stage and annoucing clearly: this is where Danzig is going to heavily blast the field. There should be one special thing about the gig as there was announced to be a Misfits special.
But first of all it started with Danzig. Eponym and front men Glenn Danzig was really in a good mode that day. Lively he went across the stage to involve the crowd. Was it more muted during the opener "Skincarver" and "Hammer Of The Gods" this was completely changing during the following classic "Twist Of Cain". There was a nice cross section through 25 years of band history until the announced Misfits special finally begun.
To that Danzigs former companion Paul Doyle Caiafa (also called Paul Wolfgang von Frankenstein) entered the stage and immediately all glances were attracted to him. Wow! That guy is really a decent figure. More that one head larger compared to Danzig and completely trained he was flawlessly maltreating his impressive Devillock. The shor songs really got the crowd in front of the stage going and on and on crowd surfer were flying across the audience. Only during the last Danzig hit "Mother" (very impressively sang along by all) Doyle left the stage over to his former boss but only to return short time after. During the encore "Die, Die My Darling" he was back again.
Overall a really strong gig which entertainingly recalled the past of Danzig and Misfits. Especially Doyle did not only optically impress, but also how he handeled his axe. That was really fun but now a short break was needed before going onto the final spurt.
