Wacken Open Air XXIX
Wacken (Germany)
(Pentax K-5 with Sigma AF 70-200mm 2.8 EX DC APO HSM II)
After classic heavy metal with Night Demon on the Headbanger Stage I went over to the adjacent W.E.T. Stage. Here the Belgian Dutch combo Spoil Engine left no doubt that they came here to burn down the tent.
Unfortunately there were only few people left over in front of the stage for that. But they went just like a train onto the energetic show and again and again circle pits opened. That was also mainly the share of singer Iris Goessens that swirled wildly across the stage, let her hair fly and permanently growled until one did not know what hit one. Also, the other allies were not less active and mixed it with the crowd as good as possible. That were mainly the guitarists Steven Sanders and Bart Vandeportaele changing positions on stage all the time to pose as well as bassist Dave De Loco who was in no way inferior to them. They were supported from the background by Mathijs Quaars on drums. The wild mixture of influences of core metal as well as bands like In Flames, Arch Enemy, Bring Me The Horizon or Architects conjured a well-made mixture.
I am not able to say which songs of which album were played (especially as singer Goessens joined them only at their last album “Stormsleeper”) but I am of the opinion that this is not necessary. Who joined them definitely had a lot of fun and that is the main point on such a gig.
