10.07.2024 Impressions from England

This year’s summer vacation took me to the island of the United Kingdom. After initial problems due to the weather, which caused a significant delay in the departure, I finally arrived in London at night. The next day, the lively city was explored. Of course, the usual sights such as the Tower, Westminster Abbey, and Big Ben were a must. Additionally, a visit to the Natural History Museum was on the agenda.
The journey then led me via Stonehenge to Bristol. At Stonehenge, the fascination lies in imagining how people back then transported these huge stone blocks and then stacked them so precisely. One has to contend with the countless people walking around the monument on a paved path. In Bristol, unfortunately, there was typical British weather: it rained. But that didn’t stop me from exploring the city, which is teeming with beautifully made murals on the houses. Banksy also started here. Nearby is Bath. The entire town is a World Heritage site, and due to the uniform facades of the houses made of the yellowish “Bath Stone,” it is quite fascinating to stroll through the city. The tour then continued with a short stop in Exeter to the region of Cornwall, where Newquay served as a base for excursions. These led to the Lost Gardens of Heligan, which are truly worth seeing, St. Michael’s Mount with its varied history, and the tin mines along the coastal strip of Botallack. Another detour took us to Bodmin Moor before slowly heading back towards London.
On the way there, the town of Lyme Regis on the Jurassic Coast was on the agenda, where you can admire plenty of ammonites and other prehistoric fossils in the stones along the coastal strip. The final stop of the England tour was Newbury, from where a day trip was made to the nearby Highclere Castle, which many might know as Downton Abbey from the series of the same name. Thus ended two weeks full of great new impressions, and finally it went back home via London.
