Wacken Open Air XXIX

Wacken (Germany)

(Pentax K-5 with Sigma AF 70-200mm 2.8 EX DC APO HSM II)

In the afternoon this year’s Wacken Open Air 2018 traditionally started with the Metal Battle Bands at the tent. This year the Romanian competitor An Theos with a mixture between folk and pagan metal should for the opener into the first day and the stage was directly really filled.
Not less than eight musicians swirled across the related to that quite small W.E.T. stage inside the enlarged Bullhead tent. This was on the one hand the two singer Florin Costachita with his screams and growls as well as Loredana Butnaru forming the female counter part with her clear voice. On guitars Gabriel Andrei and Teddy Bejanaru swirled around accompanied by Tudor Nica on bass, Lorena Mitoi on keyboards, Paula Gherasim on violin and last but not least Tudor Uscoi on drums. Their short set was formed by the two released CDs “Semintia Dacǎ“ and “Sprecer”. This was presented very energetic and also the quite numerous people (I have never experienced the tent being so crowded on a Wednesday afternoon) were fully following them. It seemed like there were also some Romanian followers as there were several flags waved inside the audience and happily recognized by the band.
That was really a great opening that musically could fully convince me. The jurors of the Metal Battle were apparently of the same opinion because finally An Theos reached at least the third place. After it started that nice it could go on like this.
