01.08.2014 Saltatio Mortis
Wacken Open Air XXV
Wacken (Germany)
(Pentax K-5 with Sigma AF 70-200mm 2.8 EX DC APO HSM II)
After Slayer blew away your ears now over to something completely different. The guys of Saltatio Mortis were allowed to besiege the Party Stage at this late hour and enthuse the masses with their middle age rock. Indeed there were also bass, guitars and drums but they were complemented by a huge number of medieval instruments. Mainly Alea der Bescheidene was hosting through the set but was actively supported by his fellows.
Because of being a show of their tour of their latest album “Das Schwarze IXI” the set was mainly formed by this album. Already the lively opener “Früher War Alles Besser” brought the mass into action. Everyone knew masterly to heat the audience up even more and to take it with them into another world of Wacken. With pipes, wheel fiddle, shepherd’s pipe and tromp the sounds were medieval although there were enough modern sounds by the electrical contingent as well as the contemporary lyrics like the sociocritical “Wachstum Über Alles”. It was already quite late but that did not do any harm to the good mood on and in front of the stage. It was loudly sang along and clapped along. For me a nice diversion and a band that you can watch and listen to at any time.
